bugging the UN

Not that I'd thought about it before the story broke, but I have to say that I would have been shocked and dismayed if the US *hadn't* had the UN bugged. If we were that bad at the intelligence game, we may as well have disbanded the CIA.

Does that make me a bad person? Or just too Byzantine?

I would disapprove of any diplomat who does not assume that there are bugs. That said, it's probably stupid to put them in -- if the diplomats assume they're there, then you don't get useful information from them, and you expose yourself to a sweep like this. And believe me, the timing of the sweep for bugs was not coincidental. Besides, all the cool kids are snooping by bouncing lasers off windows these days.

It's still not stupid to put them in. You never know when someone might slip up, or what you may be able to read between the lines.

Anyway, I'd be kind of dismayed if they're not also doing the cool kind of snooping.

...I wonder what bug sweeps of all embassies everywhere would yield.
