bugging the UN

Not that I'd thought about it before the story broke, but I have to say that I would have been shocked and dismayed if the US *hadn't* had the UN bugged. If we were that bad at the intelligence game, we may as well have disbanded the CIA.

Does that make me a bad person? Or just too Byzantine?

I would disapprove of any diplomat who does not assume that there are bugs. That said, it's probably stupid to put them in -- if the diplomats assume they're there, then you don't get useful information from them, and you expose yourself to a sweep like this. And believe me, the timing of the sweep for bugs was not coincidental. Besides, all the cool kids are snooping by bouncing lasers off windows these days.
