Today's new adventure was having to fill out a worksheet to get a number to enter on a line in a worksheet i'm filling out to get a number to enter on a line in a US tax form, to calculate what goes on a line in the main tax form.

Which will all go into calculating numbers to go on the tax amendment form for 2006. Which will eventually get me some money back. But first we have to get a notarized copy of knell's passport, and a Certificate of (my) Liability to NI contributions that has my correct address on it, and all that to file the 2007 return which will get knell a US taxpayer ID which will allow me to file this 2006 amended monster. Giving up my husband's privacy to make a quick buck from the US government -- yep, that's me.

And I'm really tired now of having to fill out the entire AMT form just to prove that I don't owe AMT.

Heh. Yeah, I had to fill out the AMT form this year, too, even though in the end, not only did I get a full refund, but the government ended up owing me MORE than my withholding.

Thanks to the way the rules for AMT are written, I have to fill out the form every time I make more than a pretty small amount (for a full-time programmer, or even for a mid-level teacher) because of the fact that I claim foreign tax credit. And then I get to take the same foreign tax credit for the AMT anyway. It's a colossal waste of forms.
