second-guessing a scholarship committee

So if you were on an Oxford committee to select scholarship recipients, and you had an applicant intending to do a degree in the Byzantine studies department, what kind of answer to the "Proposed future career (please indicate how your proposed study or research will help you in the work you expect to do)" question would make you want to give this applicant one of the scholarships?
