A workaround for the battery draining would be a battery tender (http://batterytender.com/product_info.php?products_id=11) or similar, you can leave it plugged in all the time with a fly-lead connected to the battery and get a long extension cable so it's only the low voltage stuff outside which isn't dangerous in wet weather. Much more healthy than the battery than completely draining and recharging.
I do that with my motorbike (the alarm slowly runs the battery down).
