This is mainly for the three of you (or so) who actually have an opinion about this:

How bad are Shimano Sora components, anyway?? Bad enough to justify the difference between a £499 bike with mostly those and a £1000 bike with Ultegra / 105 components?

(This is merely academic, you understand. At least until I have a nice income.)

And as long as I'm nattering on about biking: I am discovering the joys of good accessories. After the rides last weekend, if I pressed on the heel of either hand it was quite sore from all that road vibration. So I got a pair of fingerless mitts (which took me two days, as not everyone stocks women's small, and normal small is just too big) and the difference was apparent IMMEDIATELY. It was still sore if I pressed on that bit of my hand, but when I was wearing the mitts and riding the bike, it was like I wasn't pressing on that bit of my hand at all. I'm a convert.

Today I got some proper biking shorts, and a girl-specific saddle. So naturally I am sick and can't try these things out over the NICE LOVELY BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND WHEN I WAS PLANNING TO DO A 60-MILE RIDE.

I hate Oxford sometimes. Nasty students, and their little germs too.
